Expectant Mothers Blessings in St Philip Evans RC Church, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff
on Mother's day and on 27th July 2014 at Weekend masses.
A few weeks ago, we were visited by a representative from the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, who left a banner for our church depicting the famous image left on St Juan Diego’s cloak - an image of the Virgin Mary, pregnant with the Christ-Child. The banner is now on display as a part of our Advent display, as we look forward expectantly to the birth of Christ.
For some years, it has been the custom in St Philip Evans to offer a blessing to pregnant mothers on the 4th Sunday of Advent - the annual day of prayer for expectant mothers. We will continue this tradition this year, but with more than
a general blessing offered to those seated - any woman expecting a child will be welcome to come forward to receive a personal blessing, together with the child’s father, if present.
Clearly an annual day for blessing expectant mothers is not enough to cover all 9-month pregnancies which occur! So we will also offer a similar blessing in on Mothering Sunday (4th Sunday in Lent - 30 March in 2014) and on the Day for Life (last Sunday in July - 27 July in 2014). If this proves popular, we will continue the custom. There is no need to register or make yourself known beforehand; the blessing will be offered to all mothers willing to publicly identify themselves as pregnant on these days.
